Weekly OSM Summary #98

A summary of all the things happening in the OpenStreetMap world.

• Several photos of the State of the Map Europe have been uploaded to flickr. Also Serge Wroclawski and Tim Waters wrote a blog post about the conference.
• Several updates to the main OSM rendering have been rolled out.
• The International Red Cross needs your help in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia (via Humanitarian OSM Team).
• “A legend generator for Mapnik stylesheets” by Andy Allan.
• The OpenBeerMap needs several translations.
• OSM contributor Hawkeye wrote a diary entry on how you can make “a map of the mappers contributing to mapping parties“.
• MapRoulette has some new challenges: “Crossing Ways” for the US and for example “Highway intersecting building” for France. What is MapRoulette?
• “OSM Node Density Visualized” by Martin Raifer.
• Richard Fairhurst released a “Style Prototyping Utility for Mapnik” named “Sputnik”. It helps to visualize the changes you made to a Mapnik stylesheet in real time.
• The Julia OpenStreetMap Package has been published. It provides basic functionality for parsing, viewing, and working with OpenStreetMap map data. “The package is intended mainly for researchers who want to incorporate this rich, global data into their work …”.
• “Opengeofiction – Using the OSM software for mapping a fictional planet” is online. You can find the SotM-EU session here.
• Robin Hawkes and Peter Smart published a first version of their: “3D city and data visualization platform http://vizicities.com“
• Per Liedman about “Generate maps of sun and shade from OpenStreetMap data“.

After nearly 4 years and almost 100 Weekly OSM Summary posts, we would like to announce our retirement as editors from this service. Thank you for all your suggestions and submissions to the blog over the years! We hope that other volunteers will be willing to continue this service for the OSM community in the near future. We will officially end our endeavor with the 100th Weekly OSM Summary in a few weeks. This announcement does not imply that we will stop contributing to the OSM project or that we won’t conduct other data analyses in the future.
